2019 Action Alerts

Action Alert: Say NO to SB 164

We need you to take action now! Say NO to SB 164 and oppose bad bail bills in Georgia.

SB 164 mandates the extended incarceration of people who can’t pay cash bail when charged with nearly every offense, including local ordinance violations.

We are grateful for the efforts of SouthernCenter for Human Rights and Women on the Rise to defeat #SB164 and #HB340.

See SCHR’s call to action below:

We need to work together right now to keep cash bail reform alive in Georgia AGAIN!!!

@billcowsert

Sample script:

“Hello, my name is (Your Name). I live in Georgia, and I am concerned about SB 164. I am calling to ask Sen. Cowsert to withdraw his bill because it is unconstitutional, it will force cities and counties to needlessly incarcerate people, and it will waste taxpayer dollars.”

#2 CONTACT THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE AND ASK FOR A NO VOTE ON SB 164

a.    In the “To” column cut and paste:

b.    Put in the subject line: Please Vote NO on SB 164

c.    Copy and paste the following (or modify as you like):

Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee:

Please vote NO on SB 164 or hold it without further action. SB 164 will compromise public safety and waste taxpayer dollars. Specifically, the bill will worsen wealth-based detention in Georgia and prohibit local jurisdictions from being able to decide whether financial conditions are necessary to ensure court appearance and maintain public safety.

Thank you,

Plan to come to the hearing tomorrow [Monday, March 4] at 10:00AM in Room 307 of the Coverdell Legislative Office Building (CLOB), across the street from the State Capitol. The room is likely to fill quickly so it would be ideal to arrive before 9:30AM if you would like to get a seat and/or sign-up to testify.
